Xiao Yi Obtaining the Lanting Manuscript by Deceit
Xiao Yi Obtaining the Lanting Manuscript by Deceit (Xiao Yi Zhuan Lanting Tu) is a significant historical and narrative work attributed to the monk-painter Juran. Based on a famous Tang Dynasty anecdote, the painting depicts the official Xiao Yi tricking the monk Biancai to retrieve Wang Xizhi’s legendary Lanting Xu (Preface to the Orchid Pavilion) for the Emperor. This work is a rare example of figure-in-landscape painting from the Southern Landscape School, blending a tense, intellectual human drama with a grand natural setting, reflecting the literati culture and historical consciousness of the Song Dynasty.
Technically, the painting showcases Juran’s mastery of the Dong-Ju style, characterized by the use of Hemp-fiber strokes (Pima Cun) to define the soft, rounded forms of the Jiangnan hills. Unlike earlier Tang versions of this story which focused almost entirely on the figures, Juran’s rendition places the characters within a realistic natural environment. The use of moist ink washes and dense pointillist dots (Dian) creates a lush, humid atmosphere, while the meticulous detail in the figures' robes and facial expressions captures the psychological depth of the deceptive encounter.
The compositional arrangement of the work is particularly effective in its use of spatial narrative. By situating the intellectual confrontation in a secluded mountain retreat, the artist emphasizes the reclusive lifestyle and the high stakes of cultural heritage. The contrast between the monumental scale of the surrounding cliffs and the intimate, sharp interaction of the figures creates a sense of dramatic tension. This painting is celebrated for its ability to integrate inner spirit (Shencai) with physical realism, serving as a landmark in the evolution of narrative landscape art and reinforcing the calligraphic and literary foundations of Chinese painting.
