Wind in Pines Among a Myriad of Valleys

万壑松风图

Wind in Pines Among a Myriad of Valleys (Wanhe Songfeng Tu) is a seminal masterpiece by Li Tang, the pivotal artist who bridged the transition from the Northern Song to the Southern Song. Created in 1124, it is considered one of the three greatest landscape paintings in Chinese history. This work represents the final peak of the monumental landscape tradition, capturing the rugged, overwhelming power of the northern mountains with a sense of structural solidity and rhythmic energy. It is a visual symphony of vertical grandeur, where the roaring wind in the pines and the cascading water create a palpable sensory realism.

The painting’s most significant technical achievement is Li Tang’s invention of the "Ax-cut texture stroke" (Fu-pi Cun). By using the side of the brush with sharp, angular movements, he successfully rendered the hard, crystalline surfaces of the rocks and the sharp facets of the cliffs. This was a revolutionary departure from the "Raindrop" or "Hemp-fiber" strokes of earlier masters, giving the mountains a weighty, tactile quality that felt more physical and immediate. The meticulous rendering of the dense pine forest in the foreground, combined with the forceful linework of the gnarled branches, showcases a high level of technical maturity and observational precision.

The compositional depth of the work utilizes the "High Distance" (Gao Yuan) perspective to its maximum effect, filling nearly the entire silk scroll with the towering central peak. This "close-up" approach to the monumental landscape creates an immersive experience, drawing the viewer directly into the heart of the mountains. By eliminating the vast misty expanses common in later works, Li Tang emphasized material substance and "bone structure" (Gufa). This stylistic breakthrough provided the foundational aesthetic for the Southern Song Academy style, directly influencing later masters like Ma Yuan and Xia Gui, and marking the beginning of a more vigorous and expressive era in Chinese Shanshui painting.
