Bamboo and Rock

元 赵孟頫 竹石图

Bamboo and Rock is a classic work of literati painting by Zhao Mengfu, a supreme master of the Yuan Dynasty. It depicts a standing scholar’s rock beside several stalks of bamboo, using a simple and focused composition to express the lofty and pure moral character of ancient Chinese intellectuals. The painting creates a peaceful, elegant and far-reaching artistic realm, fully embodying the simple and elegant aesthetic taste of Yuan literati painting.

In brush and ink techniques, this work fully practices Zhao Mengfu’s theoretical idea of the unity of calligraphy and painting. The bamboo stalks are drawn with round, vigorous and fluent central brushstrokes, while the leaves are sketched with sharp and concise flicks. The rock is outlined with bold and dignified brushwork, supplemented by light and moist ink washes. The whole piece emphasizes expressing spirit through simplicity by means of delicate contrasts between dry and wet ink, light and dark tones, as well as ingenious blank space arrangement.

Art historically, Bamboo and Rock occupies an important position in the tradition of Chinese bamboo and stone painting. It inherits the elegant spirit of the ancient classics and gets rid of the overly elaborate skills of the Southern Song court style, establishing a new paradigm of scholarly ink painting in the Yuan Dynasty. The work perfectly integrates poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal, exerting a profound and far-reaching influence on the creation of bamboo and stone themes in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and possessing extremely high artistic and historical value.
