After Wang Shuming: Thatched Hut in Autumn Mountains

仿王叔明秋山草堂图

Wang Hui (1632–1717), one of the Four Wangs and founder of the Yushan School, was a leading master of early Qing orthodox landscape painting. After Wang Shuming: Thatched Hut in Autumn Mountains is a refined work executed in the style of the Yuan master Wang Meng (courtesy name Shuming).

The painting presents a serene autumn scene of layered mountains, dense woods, clear streams, and a simple thatched hut where a scholar resides in seclusion. The composition is compact yet spacious, with intricate texture strokes, rich ink layers, and subtle autumnal hues, conveying the quiet elegance of literati reclusion.

Wang Hui skillfully inherited Wang Meng’s dense composition and vigorous brushwork while infusing his own scholarly taste. This work exemplifies the Qing orthodox approach to absorbing and transforming Yuan literati landscape traditions.
