After Wang Meng: Reading in the Autumn Mountains
Wang Hui (1632–1717), one of the Four Wangs and founder of the Yushan School, was a leading master of orthodox landscape painting in the early Qing Dynasty. After Wang Meng: Reading in the Autumn Mountains is a classic work created in his mature style, following the brush manner of the Yuan master Wang Meng.
The painting presents a serene autumn landscape with layered mountains, dense woods, clear streams, and simple dwellings where a scholar reads quietly. The composition is deep and compact, featuring intricate texture strokes, rich ink layers, and delicate reddish tones for autumn foliage, fully capturing the secluded and elegant atmosphere of literati reclusion.
By absorbing Wang Meng’s dense composition and vigorous brushwork while infusing his own refined interpretation, Wang Hui achieved a harmonious balance between archaic learning and personal expression. This piece exemplifies the high achievement of Qing landscape painting in inheriting and transforming the traditions of Yuan literati art.
